Flood in Kapuk Teko Cemetery Begins to Recede

The two-meter high flood that inundates 3,810 graves in Kapuk Teko Public Cemetery (TPU), Kampung Apung, RW 01, Kapuk Urban Village, Cengkareng Sub-District, West Jakarta, begins to recede. This condition makes the heirs happy enough considering the cemetery has been inundated for 24 years.

The vacuuming will be conducted until two weeks ahead, so the 3,810 graves can immediately dry and all heirs can see their family’s graves again

The water starts to recede after West Jakarta Water Management Public Works Sub-Department deploys two generator vehicles, which one of them can vacuum water for as much as 100 liters per second.

Head of West Jakarta Water Management Public Works Sub-Department, Pramudji, said the water vacuuming has been conducted for almost three weeks. At this time, the water has receded for 50 centimeters, thus the gravestones which previously inundated are starting to be seen.

Graves in Kapuk Teko Cemetery to Be Relocated

“The vacuuming will be conducted until two weeks ahead, so the 3,810 graves can immediately dry and all heirs can see their family’s graves again. Afterwards, related unit will move the graves to Tegal Alur Public Cemetery,” he stated, Saturday (5/10).

Meanwhile, Nurman (55), an officer of East Jakarta Cemeteries Sub-Department, told that 30 heirs have signed up to move their family’s graves to Tegal Alur Public Cemetery, as promised by West Jakarta Administration.

“After the water begins to recede, many people contacted me. Until now, 30 heirs have signed up (to move their family’s graves to Tegal Alur Public Cemetery),” he uttered.
